PhD (Maritime Security), University of Greenwich

Before working as a journalist for several years, I served as an officer in the German Navy and I am still a member of the naval reserves. During my PhD at the University of Greenwich in London, I have conducted research on maritime security issues in sub-Saharan Africa. Topics include developments in the maritime environment, for example the evolution of private maritime security companies, the role of ports and maritime trade as well as offshore oil and gas exploration and problems caused by illegal fishing. I continue to work in that area and have been an advisor for the 'State of Maritime Piracy 2016' report, published by Oceans Beyond Piracy.
