Frank Scannapieco

Professor and Chair of Oral Biology, University at Buffalo

Frank A. Scannapieco Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Biology and Associate Dean for Faculty and Professional Development, School of Dental Medicine, State University of New York at Buffalo, is a periodontist and microbiologist with over 30 years of research experience. He received the DMD from the University of Connecticut, and the Ph.D. in Oral Biology and Certificate in Periodontology from the University at Buffalo.

He has studied oral microbiology, molecular mechanisms of bacterial colonization and the interface between oral and systemic health. He was amongst the first to define connections between poor oral health and respiratory infection in intensive care and nursing home patients. His work has contributed to the now widespread recognition for the need of oral care in the hospital and nursing home settings.

Dr. Scannapieco has authored or co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. His publications range from basic studies of oral biofilm formation, the role of saliva in biofilm formation, clinical studies of oral disease biomarkers and connections between periodontal diseases and systemic diseases such as pneumonia and diabetes.

He has mentored numerous Ph.D., Master’s, D.D.S, and B.S. students, as well as visiting scientists and post-doctoral fellows.

Dr. Scannapieco is Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontology, has edited 3 issues of Dental Clinics of North America, has served on numerous journal editorial boards, and as a manuscript referee for over 90 medical, dental and scientific journals. He has also served on numerous NIH and international grant review panels. He has received substantial funding from NIH and other agencies to support his research.

He has presented over 100 international and national lectures, scientific conferences, symposia, university lectures, and CE courses and has organized several scientific conferences. He is an active member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology and the American Association for Dental Research.
