Genna Churches is a PhD candidate at UNSW Law and member of the Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation. Her thesis, ‘The Evolution of Metadata Regulation in Australia: From Envelopes and Letters to URLs and Web Browsing’, focuses on the access to and retention of telecommunications metadata. It considers the influence of historical legislation, legislators understandings of the technology involved and fear or security based politics on the balance between privacy protections and other social objectives in current telecommunications legislation.
