Gerald Nanson has research interests in river channel erosion and floodplain formation of rivers in arid, tropical and temperate-humid regions, anabranching rivers, river rehabilitation and management, deserts and desert dunes and theoretical fluvial geomorphology. He is an active member of the GeoQuEST, with special interests in luminescence dating. His research areas include the Kimberley, Magela Creek in Northern Australia (Arnhem land and the Gulf of Carpentaria), Cooper Creek, Lake Eyre, Central Australian, western Tasmania, and rivers of inland and coastal New South Wales.
