Senior Lecturer in Education, Canterbury Christ Church University

Graham Birrell is a Senior Lecturer in the Department for Postgraduate Initial Teacher Education at Canterbury Christ Church University.

He works predominantly in the field of initial teacher education and across all the programmes that are involved in primary education. Before joining the University he was a primary school teacher in schools in Kent. He is subject leader for History and lead most of the history courses in the Faculty of Education.

He is currently researching into the impact of free market policies in education. His particular interest is in the establishment of new schools such as academies and free schools and part of my research is looking at Swedish free schools and Charter schools in the USA.

He writes on the CCCU Faculty of Education Blog at http://www.consider-ed.org.uk.
