Research Group Leader – Materials Characterisation, CSIRO

Howard Poynton is Research Group Leader – Materials Characterisation, for CSIRO Process Science and Engineering.

He leads a team who combine industry-leading expertise with sophisticated technology and techniques to characterise the physical, chemical, thermal and mechanical properties of a wide range of materials and ore types.

Mr Poynton was initially appointed manager of the Materials Characterisation Program in 2005. Since that date he has worked to expand the instrumentation and capabilities offered by the program.

His team of scientists and analysts provide project services including:

* chemical analysis
* microcharacterisation
* particle analysis
* x-ray diffraction.

Mr Poynton is particularly interested in the area of chemical spectroscopy, especially inductively coupled plasma:

* optical emissions spectrometry (ICP-OES)
* mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis.
