Professor Tumber is Director of Research for City's Graduate School of Journalism, and Co-director of the Centre for Law, Justice & Journalism.

Previously he was Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences in 2011-2012; Dean of the School of Arts in 2008-2009; Dean of the School of Social Sciences from 1999-2004; and Head of Sociology from 1996-1999.

He has published widely in the field of the sociology of news and journalism and is the author, co-author/editor of eight books including: Critical Concepts in Journalism (4 vols 2008); Journalists under Fire (2006); Media at War: the Iraq Crisis (2004); Media Power, Policies and Professionals (2000); News: A Reader (1999); Reporting Crime - The Media Politics of Criminal Justice (1994); Journalists at War (1988); Television and Riots (1982).

Professor Tumber is a founder and co-editor of the academic journal Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism. His recent work concerns the role of journalists and the reporting of international conflict.
