Dr I.D. Rusen has been with The Union since 2004 in many capacities, including Coordinator of the FIDELIS Initiative and the Director of the Tuberculosis Department for three years. He is currently leading the TREAT TB Initiative, which is spearheading the coordination and sponsorship of the STREAM clinical trial, a landmark trial for shortened MDR-TB treatment currently underway in four countries.

Dr Rusen received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba and completed a Community Medicine (Preventive Medicine) Residency and a Master’s degree in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto. He has over 15 years of experience as a technical advisor for tuberculosis and related health problems in low-income countries with both donor agencies and non-governmental organisations. He has a strong publication record, including first-authored publications in the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IJTLD), and the American Journal of Public Health and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. He also serves as Senior Vice President of Research and Development for The Union’s affiliate in North America, Vital Strategies.
