Senior Research Fellow, Queensland University of Technology

Ian O´Hara is a chemical engineer with extensive experience in the sugar industry in research and consultation, policy deveopment, production management, process design and supervision. For many years, Ian has worked at a senior management level in a sugar manufacturing company in Australia.

Ian is a Senior Research Fellow and Theme Leader - Bioenergy within the QUT Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities with current research interests in the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass, bioenergy, biorefining, process engineering, pilot plant development and sugar processing technologies. Ian undertakes consultation projects within the Australian and overseas sugar industries including design of greenfield sugar factories, integration of refining, ethanol and cogeneration facilities into sugar factories, and other work in the fields of energy efficiency, sugar recovery, cane analysis and process improvement.

Ian has implemented business improvement programs, new cane analysis and payment systems working extensively across the sugar industry value chain. Ian has been involved in policy development in areas including industry research, environment, ethanol and renewable energy.
