James Carley is a Principal Engineer at the Water Research Laboratory at UNSW. He has over 28 years experience in coastal engineering, specialising in consulting and research regarding coastal processes, coastal hazards, adaptation and physical modelling. James holds a Master of Engineering Science degree, majoring in Coastal Engineering and Physical Oceanography, and serves on Engineers Australia's NSW and National Panels/Committees for Coastal Engineering.

James is also a long term surfer, surf life saver, ocean swimmer and ocean pool swimmer, which allows him to closely understand coastal processes and community issues.
