Janjira Sombatpoonsiri

Research fellow, Thammasat University

Janjira Sombatpoonsiri is an Assistant Professor at Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University, and a Research Fellow at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). She has extensively researched civil society and digital politics, including disinformation and the impact of draconian information laws on civic space. She is the author of Humor and Nonviolent Struggle in Serbia (New York: Syracuse University Press, 2015). Her academic articles appear in several academic journals, including Journal of Peacebuilding & Development, Journal of Civil Society, Journal of Contemporary Asia, Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations, and Journal of Peace Research. Since 2021, she has been the project lead of the UNDP-funded Monitoring Centre on Organized Violence (MOVE) at the Institute of Asian Studies, Chulalongkorn University. She is currently a member of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Digital Democracy Network and a regional manager for the Digital Society Project. She was a visiting fellow at the ISEAS Yusof-Ishak (Singapore, 2021-2022), the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (Taiwan, 2020), and the Institute of Defense Studies and Analyses (India, 2017).
