Joanne Clarke is Research Associate on the WAVES Study (West Midlands ActiVe lifestyle and healthy Eating in School children study).

Joanne is particularly interested in the effect that the school environment and ethos has on children’s health and lifestyle choices.

Joanne achieved a BA (Hons) in Geography from the University of Leeds in 1996 and a MSc in Geographical Information Systems from the University of Edinburgh in 1997.

From 1997 to 1999, Joanne worked at the University of Birmingham as a Research Associate on a Randomised Controlled Trial of Smoking in Adolescence.

After two years working as an Education Project Officer at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), Joanne became Healthy Schools Coordinator for Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council.

After 10 years promoting health and well being in the schools of Sandwell, Joanne rejoined the University of Birmingham as a Research Associate on the WAVES Study.
