After a professional career as a solicitor, in retirement I volunteered as a police custody visitor. I found the scheme unsatisfactory. As there is no current academic writing about it, I decided to study it and write about it myself. I wrote a thesis based on a case study, for which I was awarded the dgree of PhD, and my book will be published by Policy Press in February 2018: Regulating Police Detention: Voices from behind closed doors.
