Head of School of Medicine, Anglia Ruskin University

John Kinnear is Head of ARU School of Medicine and is a consultant in Critical Care Medicine. He has a special interest in developing education to improve the care of acutely ill patients globally.

John graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1985, and trained in Paediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology before completing training as a specialist anaesthetist at the Barts & London School of Anaesthetics in 1998. He is currently a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Southend University Hospital in the UK.

He has a special interest in developing undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, with particular application to simulation-based education and global healthcare improvement. He co-designed and was the founding director of the high-fidelity simulation centre for the Postgraduate Medical Institute, and was formerly simulation lead for Health Education East of England. He is also Head of Programme for the Zambia MMed Anaesthesia programme based in Lusaka, which he designed specifically to address the high surgical mortality associated with anaesthesia in resource-challenged environments.
