Professor of Transport Engineering, University of the West of England

I have interests and expertise in quality design and innovation through research, sustainable development and community benefit.

I have taught all the main aspects of transport engineering and planning at undergraduate and postgraduate level including modelling, highway and traffic engineering, planning and appraisal. I have been very active in providing continuing professional development courses and conferences for transport practitioners.

My transport research interests include the experimental analysis of factors which affect infrastructure design; the assessment and modelling of perceptions of risk and effort as they influence mode and route choice; the development and implementation of prospective study methodologies for assessment of transport interventions; and the longitudinal analysis of transport data sets for monitoring purposes.

I edited the book Cycling and Sustainability published by Emerald with an international and multi-disciplinary authorship. I have also undertaken a range of pedagogical research particularly around course design, feedback and retention.
My consultancy experience includes all stages of the promotion of transport infrastructure schemes and latterly has focused on providing expert advice to teams engaged in modelling, and monitoring and evaluation.

I am a member of the Joint Board of Moderators, chair of the Editorial Advisory Panel of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Municipal Engineer, and I am also a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers Transport Expert Panel. I am a member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation membership Individual Case Procedure Panel.
