Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, West Virginia University

Dr. Johnna Bolyard is an associate professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction/Literacy Studies in the College of Education and Human Resources at West Virginia University (WVU). She holds a PhD in Mathematics Education from George Mason University and a master's in Secondary Mathematics from West Virginia University. Currently, she work with students in WVU’s five- and four-year undergraduate teacher education programs as well as masters and doctoral students in mathematics education. She teaches courses in elementary and middle grades mathematics education.

Prior to working in higher education, Dr. Bolyard worked as a classroom mathematics teacher in Loudoun County, Virginia, and also served as the district’s mathematics specialist. She has published articles in professional journals related to mathematics teacher quality, the use of technologies such as virtual manipulatives in mathematics teaching and learning, and the development and preparation of teachers of mathematics. Her ongoing research interests include the development of mathematics teachers and mathematics teacher leaders, particularly at the elementary and middle grades levels.
