I am a historian of American medicine, currently researching the United States's long history of opioid addiction. My current book in progress is a social history of opiate addiction among Civil War veterans during the Gilded Age. My publications have appeared on various websites, newspapers, and journals, including Washington Post, Slate, Nursing Clio, and The Journal of the Civil War Era. In a previous career, I taught secondary social studies. I also hold an M.A. in U.S. History from Texas Christian University (TCU) and a PhD in History from Binghamton University.
