Associate Professor, Monash University

Julie Debeljak has been an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Law at Monash University since 2013. She was a Senior Lecturer from 2007 to 2012, a Lecturer from 2002 to 2006, and an Assistant Lecturer from 1996 to 2001.

Julie has a particular interest in the field of international human rights law, comparative domestic human rights law, and constitutional law, and is a foundational Deputy Director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law. She completed her doctorate in 2004 on comparative domestic human rights protection.

Julie is currently researching the human rights issues surrounding trafficking in persons under an ARC Linkage Grant with Professors Kneebone and McSherry, and human rights in closed environments under an ARC Linkage Grant with Professor Freiberg, Dr Naylor, Dr Dussuyer and Dr Thomas.

Julie has conducted numerous human rights capacity building courses for Victorian, Australian and overseas government officials and agencies (including the judiciary). She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to undertake a summer institute about American constitutional law at Boston College in 2001, and was an intern with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in 1998.
