Professor in Global Health, King's College London

My objective is to improve health at individual and population levels, an objective I am able to pursue in my current positions as Professor of Global Health at KCL and Editor in Chief of The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. I am also currently on a research sabbatical in rural South Africa at the MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit in Agincourt, Mpumalanga.
My specialty interests are wide, but all are linked by the theme of ensuring relevant information to improve clinical care and health systems across multiple diseases. I am especially interested in non-communicable diseases and their necessary health system structures; in particular, cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors and surgical conditions. I am also interested in improving data collection for health system planning. Of note, I have been an author on The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery and The Lancet Commission on Women and Health. I am a lead commissioner on The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on Diabetes in Sub Saharan Africa (in press). I have lectured around the world on the topics of good research practice, health care metrics, non-communicable diseases, diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa, global surgery, and translating research into practice.
Previously I have done medical research in clinical pharmacology in the diabetes and cardiovascular fields. I have also practiced as a medical cardiologist. As well as working as an editor, clinician, and researcher, I have been a freelance journalist and worked as a scientific advisor to the BBC. I hold degrees in Forensic Medicine and Medical Law, Medicine, and Zoology; an MD in Clinical Pharmacology; a performance diploma (ABRSM); and am a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London. In my spare time, I try (unsuccessfully) to stay on horses and play the violin in a chamber music setting.
