She is a graduate student at Umeå University, Sweden, pursuing a PhD in public health with a focus on air pollution and health. She is particularly passionate about the intersection between environmental factors and maternal and child health

She holds a Master of Science degree in Field Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.

Kanyiva joined APHRC in 2000, working on the Nairobi Urban Health and Demographic Surveillance System (NUHDSS) as a field staff and has also served as a field supervisor at APHRC.
