Dr Karen McIntyre joined Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015 as an assistant professor at the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture, teaching journalism classes. She was also a 2018-19 Fulbright Scholar in Rwanda. Her research interests involve journalism processes and effects as well as journalism practice in east Africa. Primarily, she focuses on constructive journalism – an emerging form of journalism that involves applying positive psychology techniques to news work in an effort to produce stories that are more productive. Karen has publications in journals including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Studies and Journalism. Before academia, Karen worked as a print and multimedia journalist in California and abroad. She received her PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, her MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and her BA from California State University, Chico. Karen is originally from Lake Tahoe, CA.
