I am a researcher at the University of Sydney, Australia, investigating the impacts of human activities on the Great Barrier Reef. Specifically, I am interested in the response of non-coral invertebrates, such as starfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers, to anthropogenic impacts like ocean warming, ocean acidification and over-fishing. My work has focused on two main organisms: 1) the Crown-of-thorns starfish, which has significant population outbreaks on the reef, and 2) tropical sea cucumbers, which are currently in a perilous state of conservation due to global over-harvest. This research has been conducted at several research stations on the Great Barrier Reef including One Tree, Heron, Lizard and Orpheus Islands. Conservation of these ecosystems is becoming increasingly important in the face of global change.
