Foundation Professor of Medicine, Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) since 2002; Director of Research, BSMS 2008-2014; Honorary Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust (BSUHT); Associate Medical Director, Head of Research and Development, BSUHT; Associate International Director (Europe), Royal College of Physicians (2008-2017); Kent, Surrey and Sussex CRN Division 5 Clinical Lead (2014 - ), Governor SASH (2015-).

He was formerly Senior Lecturer and Reader in Rheumatology, Imperial College School of Medicine, and Clinical Director of Medicine, Hammersmith Hospital.

At BSMS he leads the undergraduate clinical teaching programme in Medicine, and helped to set up the new school from its start-up in 2002. His research interests are in auto-immune disease and rheumatology, both in immunopathogenesis, and in clinical aspects. Clinically he practises Rheumatology (specialising in SLE and related conditions), and is actively involved in several clinical trials in inflammatory rheumatic diseases, particularly lupus. He also works on fibromyalgia and chronic pain and has an interest in the pathological mechanisms underlying these conditions.
