Ginnivan was President of the Student Union at ANU in 2011, before joining the Grattan Institute at the start of 2012.

There she conducted public policy research and analysis on economic reform, pharmaceutical pricing, female workforce participation, innovation policy and the rural health workforce among other topics.

She served as adviser to independent Federal MP Cathy McGowan for the first six moths of her term, finishing in February 2014.
