Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, Birmingham City University

Lewis has extensive experience delivering learning material to both undergraduates and postgraduate students, primarily in physiology and nutrition. Lewis has also completed a PGCert in Higher Education and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Lewis has published multiple high-quality research outputs in internationally recognised journals. Much of his work to date has focused on optimal methods to supplement sodium bicarbonate and other performance enhancing supplements. A further strand of this research has been to investigate the use of supplements on physiological thresholds (W’ and Critical power) and in extreme environments (hypoxia).

Lewis primarily explores the impact of changes in acid base balance and how this influences exercise performance and health. Using alkalotic substances to manipulate acid base balance, he has published multiple outputs on individualised timing, avoiding gastrointestinal discomfort and high-intensity exercise performance.

Lewis also enjoys engaging in applied practice as a consultant physiologist/nutritionist, by previously and currently supporting numerous professional football teams and individual players, Olympic level track cyclists, and national level boxers. This has entailed delivering workshops to groups, but also working on a 1-1 basis developing bespoke nutrition and training interventions. Lewis also likes to engage with the community, delivering interventions and workshops to individuals seeking health related advice including weight loss strategies.
