Composite materials need fibres that bond strongly with surrounding material. I have discovered that large sections of the carbon fibre surface which were previously thought to be unreactive are actually an untapped resource for chemical reactions. As a result, there are now many more ways in which we can alter the carbon fibre surface, and make stronger composites.
