I am an evolutionary biologist, and am especially interested in what shapes genetic variation for traits that are closely linked to fitness. Such traits are expected to experience strong selection, which normally will erode genetic variation, but some mechanisms can maintain variation in spite of strong selection. My research explores how such phenomena engender and sustain diversity in natural systems, and attempts to use natural systems as models for the evolutionarily sustainable control of herbivorous insects in agricultural settings.
