Senior Manager: National Standards and Reviews, University of Zululand

Dr Marhaya is a Senior Manager who works for the Council on Higher Education. His primary responsibility at the CHE is in the national reviews and development of qualification standards for the higher education sector.In this role, he works with all institutions, both public and private in each of the primary areas, which are national reviews and qualification standards. He sits in the extended MANCO of the CHE where he contributes in strategic plan formulation, development of Annual Plans and various strands of policy formulation.
His work experience included that of working as a Senior Educational Development Practitioner at University of Venda, Centre for Higher Education Teaching and Learning. Amongst some of his activities was to steer Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) related research in the Centre and the university as a whole. His other primary responsibilities was to develop and steer the PGDHE ( Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education) and represent the department in the Western Cape Universities consortium. Apart from these responsibilities, he was also involved in Academic Development initiatives in the Centre working with academic departments in steering and providing workshops on the following: Curriculum Development/ dialogues/ Assessment of Student Learning and Teaching Portfolio development short courses.
Amongst some of his qualifications are: Project Management ( NMMU), MA ( Higher Education) University of Free State, Doctoral of Philosophy ( Education, sepecialising in Academic Development, a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education ( Academic Developers) at Rhodes University. He sits in the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of South Africa (HELTASA) executive committee and is responsible for steering Curriculum Dialogues across universities nationally. Luyanda has over 14 years in the field of Academic Development having worked for four universities in South Africa, an experience that has given him a diverse perspective on the higher education landscape. As part of his research initiatives, Luyanda has a number a journal articles in national and international journals. In addition, he also mentors and supervises a number of postgraduate students.
