MacKenzie Smith is the University Librarian and Vice Provost of Digital Scholarship at the University of California, Davis. She specializes in technology and digital knowledge management, and is charged with helping the library and the university adopt digital resources and information technology to meet the needs of 21st Century students and scholars. She previously worked for the libraries of Harvard and MIT, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she led cutting-edge projects on digital libraries and archives, such as the popular DSpace open source software platform for archiving digital research products, Web platforms for online scholarly communication, and digital data curation in support of e-science. She has consulted widely with library and higher ed organizations, notably the Association of Research Libraries, designing and leading its E-Science Institute, and Creative Commons, developing its strategy for open science and research data sharing. She is focused on the intersection of scholarly communication, technology, and libraries.
