Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies, The Open University

Marion Bowman works at the interstices of religious studies and folklore/ ethnology.

Her research focus is contemporary spirituality in the UK and Europe, the lived experiences, beliefs, practices and material culture of individuals both within and on the margins of institutional religion. Since the 1990’s she has conducted fieldwork in Glastonbury, a microcosm of ‘non-aligned’ spirituality, of the movement away from institutions to the importance of networks and new forms of community, and of spiritual experimentation including the creation of myth, ritual and tradition. She is also interested in material culture, sacred space, contemporary Celtic spirituality, pilgrimage, airport chapels, spiritual economy and religion in Newfoundland.
