Mark grew up in the forest industry and from the family sawmill went on to get his B.Sc.F.E. from the University of New Brunswick and become a researcher with the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC).

His research focussed on forest transportation efficiency and road maintenance management.

Through this time as a researcher at FERIC, Mark obtained a Masters in Engineering from the Université du Quebec. After six years as a researcher Mark took on the leadership of the transportation group at FERIC.

In September 2007, Mark left FERIC to take a program leader role with CRC forestry in Australia providing research and solutions in forest operations for the Australian forest industry.

Through CRC Forestry Mark has worked on building extended collaborative research networks and, in addition to managing the harvesting and operations program, is responsible for managing industry engagement for CRC Forestry, is a member of an EU COST Action (FP0902) on Biomass Harvesting, is a member of the Australian technical committee developing an ISO standard for bioenergy sustainability assesment, is on the technical advisory committee for an EU FP7 program for biomass supply chains, and is the chairman of the Southern Hemisphere Forest Operations Research Committee that he helped found in 2009/10.

Mark started 2012 with a move to the University of the Sunshine Coast where he has maintained his CRC for Forestry roles and responsibilities through its wrap-up and, on the back of the succesful CRC for Forestry harvesting program, has established the Australian Forest Operations Research Alliance (AFORA) at USC.
