I am an academic GP with an engineering background and interests in nutrition and cardiovascular medicine. Current research interests include probiotics and their influence on antibiotic resistance and infections and the long-term effects of antibiotics. I am also interested in medical technology and we are currently investigating if inexpensive consumer fitness devices can be used to screen for an irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) which causes around 15-20% of all strokes. Importantly treatment can be given to lower the risk if atrial fibrillation is detected.
