Marnie Hughes-Warrington

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Monash University

Professor Hughes-Warrington trained in the fields of history, philosophy and education at the University of Tasmania and at Oxford and worked at the University of Washington, Seattle and at Macquarie University before taking up the role at Monash. A passionate teacher of history, she has worked to expand the range of topics and forms of expression and assessment that students encounter in secondary and tertiary studies in order to encourage them to see themselves as agents in narratives of global change. The students' experiences, in turn, have inspired her research and publications on the nature of history, world history and historical films, and her work in university leadership. She is the author of five books, holds concurrent ALTC and ARC grants, led a national project on historical thinking and has played a shaping role in state-, national- and international discussions on the teaching of history. She also brings to Monash experience in curriculum reform and renewal, work on standards development and the creation of a projects culture focused on the enhancement of learning and teaching.

In 2008 Professor Hughes-Warrington was the recipient of the Prime Minister's Award for University Teacher of the Year and the recipient of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Teaching Excellence Award in Humanities and the Arts.
