Mary Laughren's engagement with the Warlpiri people and language started in 1975 when appointed research officer in linguistics to support the new bilingual education program at Yuendumu school which later extended to the schools in Willowra, Lajamanu and Nyirrpi. From 1993 till 2009 she taught linguistics at The University of Queensland. She continues to research and document Australian languages, especially Warlpiri and Waanyi.
