Principal Lecturer in Journalism, University of Portsmouth

Mary Williams is Associate Dean (Students) for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Principal Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Portsmouth. Mary has many years experience working in the journalism industry, managing news, sport and features at various regional media companies, and working as a freelance journalist for national newspapers and magazines. She also worked in PR, both running her own PR consultancy for a range of clients and working at an agency. Since joining the university in 2007 she has been responsible for teaching all types of reporting from social-friendly news and sport content to longform articles. Her specialism is mobile journalism, teaching students how to filmi and edit with smartphones, as well as DSLRs and desktop editing packages. Mary also teaches sports reporting and supervises final year dissertations and practical journalism major projects. Her research interests lie in the impact of mobile devices and associated emerging and immersive technology on content creation and delivery in the worlds of HE and journalism.
