Matthew Kirkcaldie

Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience, University of Tasmania

I'm a researcher and lecturer in neuroscience, with special interest in neuroanatomy, the development of the nervous system, the structure of nerve cells and the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. Together with Charles Watson and George Paxinos I wrote an introductory textbook, The Brain: An Introduction to Functional Neuroanatomy, and I am interested in the teaching of neuroscience, for which I coordinate a national committee for the Australasian Neuroscience Society.
In my work for the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre I study the causes of Alzheimer's disease, more accurate techniques for measuring microscopic images, and I also do a lot of public education and outreach about dementia, most notably on the Understanding Dementia MOOC (http://www.utas.edu.au/wicking/understanding-dementia).
