Maz started his university academic and teaching career as a Research Associate at the University of Birmingham in 2001. Having worked on a joint project with the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford on ethnic minority defendants' perceptions of their treatment by the criminal justice system, Maz then joined Coventry University as a Visiting Lecturer in Law in 2002 and then as a full-time Lecturer in Law in 2003.

Maz has since worked at a number of other universities, including teaching law and criminology at Anglia Ruskin University (2011-2012), the University of Derby and one of its affiliate colleges (2013-2016) and was appointed Lecturer in Law at MMU in March 2016.
