Dr. Michael Batu is a Filipino-Canadian economist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). His research interest lies in the broad area of applied econometrics, applied macroeconomics, development economics, and the scholarship of teaching and learning economics. His research and expert opinions about economic issues have been featured in several local and international media outlets, including the Washington Post and Windsor Star. He is a mainstay in news and current affairs programs in the Philippines.

Before joining UFV, Dr. Batu was a limited term Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Windsor. He also did policy and program analysis as a labour market economist for the Government of Ontario. Dr. Batu’s other academic appointments include visiting scholarships at the University of Guelph and Universidade Federal Ceara in Fortaleza, Brazil. Dr. Batu is currently a member of the Canadian Economics Association and a full-fledged member of Council of Economics Educators of the Philippines.
