Michael Makdissi

Sports Medicine Physician and Honorary Fellow, The University of Melbourne

Michael Makdissi completed his initial medical training at St. Vincent’s hospital in Melbourne before commencing as a sports medicine registrar in 2001. Since this time, Michael has been involved in providing sports medicine coverage for a range of sports including AFL, netball, cricket, rugby league, track and field, cycling, swimming, gymnastics, boxing and volleyball at recreational through to elite levels.

In 2006, Michael undertook a fellowship in sports medicine at the Australian Institute of Sport and managed to complete his PhD at the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine (University of Melbourne) in the area of concussion.

This research has lead to the development of concussion management guidelines in sports such as AFL (he has been involved with the Hawthorn football club since 2007).

Apart from concussion in sport, Michael’s professional areas of interest include hip and groin disorders, stress fractures and injuries in the adolescent athlete and their prevention.
