Dr Neville Sweijd is Director of the ACCESS programme, having joined the programme full time in January 2011. Neville has a PhD in marine science which he obtained from the University of Cape Town. He has worked in various roles with the job of building and implementing science and training programmes in South Africa and the sub-region, having served as Director of the intergovernmental BENEFIT programme based in Namibia (2001-2007) and worked at the University of the Western Cape at the International Ocean Institute before that. He is serving as Deputy President of the international Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) programme. His research currently is focused on the role of the trends in seasonal climate characteristics as manifestations of inter-annual climate variability and climate change with a particular interest in the relationship between climate and health and has been and is the lead investigator in several international research projects on this topic.
