Nick is the coordinator of the Victorian Food Systems Network project of the Food Alliance (Deakin University), funded by VicHealth. This one-year project aims to establish collaborative spaces and forums for stakeholders from across Victoria's food system to work together to tackle the big issues we are facing, from soil to stomach. Nick has focused particularly on the establishment of an Urban Food Network and a project to create an Urban Food Charter for Victoria.
Nick is also the National Coordinator of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA). Formed just prior to the 2010 Federal Election, AFSA is a membership-based not-for-profit association, campaigning for fair, sustainable and resilient food systems, based on the democratic principles of Food Sovereignty. AFSA released its Peoples Food Plan for Australia in August 2013, during Australia's first Fair Food Week, which AFSA coordinated. AFSA has recently launched a farmers' chapter, Fair Food Farmers United.
Nick is also a Director of the Food Connect Foundation. Food Connect is one of Australia's most innovative food-based social enterprises, pioneering alternative food distribution systems based on a multi-farmer model of community-shared agriculture. Farmers and growers supplying Food Connect receive around 40-50 cents per dollar of produce compared to around 15 cents per dollar through conventional distribution (central market and supermarket) channels.
