Nigel is Head of the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at Nottingham Trent University.

Nigel has held previous positions at a number of universities in the UK and New Zealand, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the College of Business and Law at the University of Canterbury (2004-11), Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (2000-04), Head of Department of Business Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University (1996-2000) and Lecturer/Jean Monnet Chair of European Economic Studies at the University of Leicester (1989-96).

He has served as an economic policy advisor to the Prime Minister of Belarus and the Deputy Minister of Economy of the Russian Federation and managed a number of international research and educational development projects in central and eastern Europe and south-east Asia. He has held visiting professorships at Kent State University, South Dakota State University, Vilnius University, University of Gdansk, St Methodius and St Cyril University (Bulgaria), Szczecin University, Belarus State University, Peking University (New Zealand Centre) and, currently, Sichuan University.
