Patrick T. Allen

Senior Lecturer in New Media Design, University of Bradford

Briefly, my University education: BA Art History at Sussex University; MSc Artificial Intelligence at Sussex University; PhD "Framing Media Transformations". The thesis was an attempt to make sense of the rapid flow of technological change in contemporary media spaces applied to what/how we see (visual literacy) and how we engage with 'media texts' composed of many different types of media (multimodality).

These days my research has been dominated by the rapid development of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and the design of systems for real-world applications such as immersive displays in Museums and the gamification of aspects of Public Health Promotion (walking and cycling). I am most interested in the impact of these technologies on human experience and our 'sense of space'. I have published research, over many years, on what I call "augmented space" - which is a more general concept than AR/VR - but helps to shift the research perspective onto a more general, human and experiential one.

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

I am a musician and currently play in band called The Flying Squirrels.
