Trained as a physicist I have worked on complex instruments used by materials scientists and chemistry researchers. I spent 20 years at the National Physical Laboratory before coming to Newcastle University in 2008. I'm director of the National EPSRC XPS Users' Service, providing surface analysis expertise and capability to those who need it in UK universities and industry.
