Associate Professor of Information Technology, Federation University Australia

Peter Vamplew is an Associate Professor in Information Technology within the School of Engineering and Information Technology at Federation University Australia's Ballarat campus. He joined Federation University Australia (or the University of Ballarat as it was then) in 2005 after fifteen years as a lecturer at the University of Tasmania, where he completed his PhD on the topic of automated recognition of sign language using artificial neural networks.

Peter's research interests lie broadly in the domain of machine learning – that is, computer programs which can learn to carry out ‘intelligent’ tasks by learning to modify their behaviour on the basis of instruction and/or experience.
In particular he is a leader in the emerging field of multiobjective reinforcement learning, which involves the development of algorithms which learn to carry out sequential decision-making tasks which require trade-offs to be made between two or more conflicting objectives.
