Pierluigi Mancarella

Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Professor of Smart Energy Systems, University of Manchester

I'm a Professor of Smart Energy Systems and part of the Power and Energy Division in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

I got my MSc (2002) and PhD (2006) degrees in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems) from the Politecnico di Torino, in Italy. However, I'm originally from Salento, the tip of the heel of the Italian "boot". During my PhD I was also a visiting student at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, in 2004.

After getting my PhD, I worked as a Research Fellow for one and half year in Torino, and then I moved to Imperial College London where I was a Research Associate from January 2008 to April 2011.

During my appointment in Manchester, I've also been Visiting Professor at Ecole Centrale de Lille, France, in June 2013, May 2014, and May 2016, a Visiting Professor at the Universidad de Chile, Santiago, in January 2015, and a Visiting Researcher at the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), Golden, Colorado, in August 2015.

I have been teaching for several years "Power Systems Operation and Economics" and "Smart Grid and Sustainable Electricity Systems" in both the Electrical Power Systems Engineering (EPSE) and Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (ReaCT) MSc courses.

I'm currently leading a team of 8 bright researchers, and am leading or am involved in 7 research projects sponsored by the EPSRC, the European Commission, and various industrial companies, in the areas of: techno-economics of multi-energy systems (electricity, heat, transport, gas, hydrogen); planning of networks under uncertainty; business cases for smart grid technologies, including community energy systems, demand response, and energy storage; and risk and resilience analysis of future networks.

I'm author/editor of four books, five book chapters and above 150 research papers in top-class peer-reviewed international journals and conferences.

I am an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Electrical Power&Energy Systems, and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Systems Journal. I am also the Chair of the IEEE Europe Working Group on Energy, a Member of the Working Group on Network Operations and Assets of the European Technology Platform (ETP) on Smart Grids, a Member of the Cigre Committee C6 on Distribution Networks and Distributed Generation, and a Committee Member of the Microgrids Symposium.
