Pierre-Jean Clausse

Researcher in European Politics, Harvard University

Pierre-Jean Clausse specialises in the study of climate and youth policy, particularly public participation of youth and action against environmental public participation. He initiated the creation of a European affairs think-and-do tank based in Paris, Génération Maastricht (2020) - which turned out to become the largest youth-led organisation of its kind in Europe.

He joined the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Commission on Environmental Law (2021) for a three-year mandate to enhance the development and strengthen the implementation of environmental law and policy. He sits on the UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention)’s Task Force for Public Participation (2021) and regularly intervenes at the United Nations to talk about empirical approaches to environmental public participation and youth participation.

Through this engagement, the European Commission sponsored his candidacy as European Climate Pact Ambassador in February 2022, a position to which he was confirmed to in May 2022 for an annual mandate. He aims to act as a bridge between civil society, interested stakeholders and the European Commission through best practices and inter-sectoral strategies. His work draws on theories developed in legal geography and climate political economy at the European level, by engaging with multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary debates in his fields of studies.
