Prema Arasu is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre. Prema has an MLitt in Modern & Contemporary Literature & Culture from the University of St Andrews and a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Western Australia.

Prema has published academic work, poetry, prose, and creative nonfiction on the topics of speculative fiction, gender, queer studies, and mythology. Their PhD dissertation, 'Gender in Secondary Worlds', explores how gender is addressed in the worldbuilding of fantasy novels.

Prema's current research at the Deep-Sea Centre considers how speculative fiction and experimental forms might provide us with new ways of talking about and conceptualising the oceans, particularly in the context of the Anthropocene. Their approach is interdisciplinary; integrating the methodologies of literary studies, creative arts, environmental humanities, philosophy, and science communication.
