After gaining a BSC (Hons 1) in Neurophysiology and Ornithology, I spent two years as a scientific editor (New Zealand journal of zoology) with the former New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, then returned and completed a PhD in avian palaeobiology and systematics.
