Visiting Professor, LSE Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion and Professor of Education at the University of Manchester, London School of Economics and Political Science

I am a Visiting Professor at LSE's Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion and a Professor of Education at the University of Manchester.

I was previously Principal Research Fellow and Deputy Director at the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion. Between 2004 and 2008 I worked at the Institute of Education, University of London, where I directed the London Education Research Unit (LERU).

Before taking up an academic career, I worked in local government and as an independent social researcher and I continue to see my work as being ‘research for policy and practice’. I’ve served as a Specialist Advisor to the UK House of Commons Select Committee on Education and Skills, and on the National Equality Panel, as well as working with local groups on neighbourhood problems and with teachers grappling with challenging contexts.
